According to Guitar World, in 1997, Layne Staley, using the entity the Larusta Trust (Layne often used the fake name John Larusta in his business dealings, perhaps as a reference to the Alice in Chains' classic "Rooster"), purchased an apartment in Seattle's bustling University District.This would be the singer's home for the next five years leading up to his death.. The last public appearance he made was almost four years before his death when he attended his bandmate Jerry Cantrell's solo concert in Seattle on Halloween in 1998. Staley couldn't bring himself to join Cantrell on stage after being asked, and a photo taken of him backstage is the last image of the singer before his death.
